If you're thinking about Pokémon cards as an investment (or at least as something you'd like to hold value), you've probably wondered whether to buy raw or graded. Both have their place, and the right choice depends on what you're trying to achieve.
The Case for Buying Raw
Raw cards are cheaper per unit. A card that costs £30 raw might cost £80 to £100 in a graded 9 or 10 slab. If you're building a large collection on a budget, raw cards give you more variety for your money.
Raw cards also give you the option to grade them yourself later. If you're good at evaluating condition, you can cherry-pick raw cards in exceptional condition, grade them, and potentially profit from the price difference. This is essentially what professional "cracker" and "grading flippers" do.
The downside of raw cards is uncertainty. You don't truly know the condition until a professional evaluates it. What looks perfect to your eye might have issues that only show under magnification.
The Case for Buying Graded
Graded cards have verified, standardised condition ratings. A PSA 10 is a PSA 10 regardless of who's selling it. This removes the guesswork and makes buying and selling simpler, especially online where you can't inspect cards in person.
Graded cards are also better protected. The rigid slab case guards against handling damage, humidity, and UV fading. If you're holding cards long term, graded cards will maintain their condition without any additional care.
The premium you pay for a graded card is essentially paying for certainty and preservation. Whether that premium is worth it depends on the specific card and grade.
What Actually Performs Better Over Time?
Looking at price data from the last few years, high-grade copies (9s and 10s) of popular cards tend to hold value better during market downturns and recover faster during upswings. The reason is straightforward: there's a finite supply of gem mint copies, and collector demand for the best condition never really goes away.
Raw cards can be more volatile. When the market dips, raw cards drop faster because buyers become more selective and gravitate toward the security of graded copies. When the market rises, raw cards benefit from increased overall demand but the percentage gains are often lower than the graded equivalents.
The Hybrid Approach
Many experienced collectors do both. They buy raw cards for personal enjoyment and collecting, and they buy (or grade) slabbed copies of their highest-value cards. This gives them the best of both worlds: a broad collection to enjoy plus protected, verified copies of their most important cards.
