We get asked the same questions repeatedly, so here they are with straight answers.
Do I have to send my cards to America for grading?
No. There are now grading services based in the UK that accept domestic submissions. You can post your cards via Royal Mail and get them back within a few weeks without dealing with international shipping or customs.
How much does it cost to grade a single card in the UK?
Typically £10 to £25 per card depending on the service level and company. Add £7 to £8 for outbound tracked postage and £5 to £10 for return shipping. A single card ends up costing about £20 to £35 all in.
Is it cheaper to grade in bulk?
Yes. Most companies offer bulk rates for submissions of 10 or more cards. Per-card pricing drops by £2 to £5 depending on the company. Shipping costs also get spread across more cards, bringing the effective per-card cost down further.
What cards are worth grading?
Cards worth £30 or more in raw condition that you believe are in excellent shape. Check what the graded version sells for. If a 10 at least doubles the raw value, it's worth considering.
My card looks perfect. Will it get a 10?
Maybe, maybe not. Cards that look perfect to the naked eye can have flaws visible under magnification. Centring might be slightly off. There might be a print line you haven't noticed. Manage your expectations and be pleasantly surprised rather than disappointed.
Can I grade fake cards?
Grading companies will identify fakes during the authentication process. If a card is determined to be counterfeit, it won't receive a grade. Most companies will return it to you with a note. You won't get a refund on the grading fee.
Do graded cards sell for more on eBay?
Generally yes, especially at grades 9 and 10. The premium varies by card. Popular cards with strong demand see the biggest grading premiums. Less popular cards might see minimal improvement.
How should I package my cards for submission?
Penny sleeve, then card saver or top loader. Wrap in bubble wrap. Ship in a rigid mailer or small box via tracked service. Don't use excessive tape on the card holders themselves.
Can I grade Japanese cards in the UK?
Yes. UK grading companies accept cards from any region. Japanese, Korean, Chinese, and English cards can all be graded.
What happens if my card gets damaged during grading?
Reputable grading companies have insurance and damage policies. If they damage a card during the grading process, they'll compensate you for the declared value. This is one reason why accurately declaring card values on your submission form matters.
How long until I get my cards back?
UK services: 1 to 4 weeks depending on service tier. PSA from the UK: 6 to 12 weeks minimum including shipping both ways.
