People focus on the number. A 10, a 9, an 8. But there's a practical side to grading that gets less attention: the slab itself is the best long-term protection your card can get.
What the Slab Actually Does
A grading slab is a sealed, rigid plastic case designed specifically for trading cards. It's made from UV-resistant materials that block the ultraviolet light that causes colour fading over time. The case is sealed shut, meaning no dust, moisture, or contaminants can reach the card inside.
The card sits in a precise inner holder that prevents it from moving around inside the case. There's no rattling, no shifting, no contact with anything except the holder it was placed in during grading.
Protection From Handling
Every time someone touches a raw card, there's a chance of damage. Fingerprint oils on the surface, micro-scratches from sliding against sleeves, dents from being pressed too hard. These tiny bits of wear accumulate over time.
A slabbed card can be picked up, passed around, displayed, and stored without any contact with the card surface itself. The slab takes all the handling wear instead of the card.
Humidity and Temperature
Card stock is sensitive to moisture. High humidity causes cards to warp and curl. Temperature swings can make the card expand and contract, eventually causing surface cracks or layer separation.
The sealed slab creates a microenvironment around the card. While it's not a perfect climate-controlled chamber, it significantly reduces the card's exposure to humidity fluctuations.
UV Fading
Sunlight fades card colours. This happens slowly but steadily. A card displayed near a window for a year will look noticeably different from one stored in a dark box. Holographic cards are particularly vulnerable because the holo layer reacts to UV exposure.
Modern grading slabs use UV-resistant plastic that blocks most harmful wavelengths. Your card can sit on a shelf in a well-lit room without the same fading risk as a raw card.
Is Slabbing Worth It Just for Protection?
If you have cards worth £50 or more that you plan to keep for years, the answer is yes. The grading fee is essentially an insurance policy. A card worth £100 today that's properly preserved in a slab will still be in the same condition in 10, 20, or 30 years. A raw card in a penny sleeve might not be.
