If there's one thing that costs collectors more grading points than anything else, it's whitening. Those tiny white spots or lines that appear on the edges and corners of cards are the single most common reason a card drops from a potential 10 to an 8 or lower.
What Causes Whitening?
Pokémon cards are made from layered cardstock. The outer layers carry the printed image and colour. Underneath is a white core layer. When the outer coloured layer gets worn away, even microscopically, the white core shows through. That's whitening.
It happens from handling, shuffling, sliding in and out of sleeves, rubbing against other cards, or simply from the card being bumped or knocked. Corners and edges are most vulnerable because they're the contact points when cards are handled.
Where to Look for It
Check the four corners first, both front and back. Hold the card under bright light and look at each corner from slightly above. Any white specks or lines against the coloured border are whitening.
Next, run your eye along all four edges. Look for any interruptions in the colour. On dark-bordered cards (like many older sets), whitening is very easy to spot because white stands out against black or dark blue. On the yellow Pokémon borders, it's subtler but still visible.
Don't forget the back of the card. The blue backing shows whitening clearly, especially along the edges and at the corners.
How Much Does It Affect the Grade?
Even a single visible white spot on a corner can prevent a card from getting a 10. Multiple corners with whitening will likely cap the card at an 8. Heavy whitening across several edges and corners pushes grades down to 6 or 7.
Graders use magnification, so whitening that's barely visible to your naked eye will be clearly visible to them. If you can see it without a loupe, the grader will definitely see it.
Can You Fix Whitening?
No. Any attempt to colour in or conceal whitening with markers, paint, or other materials will be detected during grading and the card will be flagged as altered. An altered card receives no grade or a qualified grade that significantly reduces its value.
Whitening is permanent damage. The best approach is prevention: sleeve your cards immediately, handle them by the edges, and store them properly.
